Sensory Accommodations

Sensory toolboxes transformed my practice; all of my patients ask for it. They make it possible for me to do my job.”
 – Dr. Marilyn Augustyn (Director of BMC Division of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics)

Sensory Toolbox

Our sensory toolboxes serve to make our patients feel as comfortable as possible during their visit to BMC. Toolbox items are meant to calm, distract, and redirect patients challenged by an overstimulating healthcare environment.

Some items include a weighted lap pad, noise-cancelling headphones, light-up wands, sunglasses, fidget toys, and communication cards.

Sensory toolboxes are available in many departments at BMC, including:

  • Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics
  • Pediatric Primary Care
  • Pediatric Neurology
  • Public Safety
  • Phlebotomy
  • Pediatric Otolaryngology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Henry S. Goldman School of Dental Medicine
  • Grow Clinic
  • Pediatric Radiology
  • Pediatric Sedation
  • Rehabilitation Therapy
  • Pediatric Dermatology
  • Pediatric Dental

When arriving for your visit, make sure to ask if a sensory toolbox is available! You can also contact the Autism Friendly Initiative at or
