Through Grant & Telemedicine, Boston Medical Center Expanding Access to Epilepsy Care

(Boston) - Nov. 17, 2016 - Boston Medical Center (BMC) has been awarded a three-year, $1.2 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration to expand access to high quality care for underserved populations of children and youth with epilepsy and related disorders. BMC’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and Section of Pediatric Neurology will lead the ‘Telehealth Epilepsy Care Collaborative,’ a program that aims to reach a minimum of 1,000 children and youth up to age 24 with epilepsy through advanced telemedicine applications.

Safety-Net Hospitals Remain Vital Resource for Minority Patients Following Health Reform, Study Finds

(Boston) – June 17, 2016 – A new study led by researchers at Boston Medical Center(BMC) found that the proportion of discharges among minority patients receiving inpatient care at minority-serving hospitals in Massachusetts increased after the implementation of health insurance reform measures which expanded access to care in non-safety net hospitals. The research suggests that minority-serving hospitals remain an important and vital component of the health care system and may benefit greatly from interventions such as raising Medicaid reimbursement rates. The study is published online ahead of print in the journal Medical Care.

Boston Medical Center’s Adult, Pediatric Trauma Centers Re-Verified By American College of Surgeons

(Boston) - May 23, 2016 - Boston Medical Center’s (BMC) Trauma Center has been re-verified as a Level I adult trauma center and a Level II pediatric trauma center by the Verification Review Committee, an ad hoc committee of the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The re-verification confirms that BMC’s Trauma Center meets the essential criteria that ensures trauma care capability and institutional performance.

Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor Jeff Bauman and Actor Jake Gyllenhaal join Boston Medical Center’s Boston Marathon Team as Honorary Co-captains

(Boston) – March 21, 2016 – Boston Medical Center (BMC) is pleased to announce that former BMC patient, Jeff Bauman, and actor Jake Gyllenhaal, are honorary co-captains of Team BMC, a group of 87 people running this year’s Boston Marathon in support of BMC. Bauman, who was severely injured in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, was rushed to BMC, where he was successfully treated for his traumatic injuries. He became a symbol of the city’s strength and pride and his account of that day and his recovery, outlined in his inspiring memoir titled “Stronger,” will be adapted into a film where Gyllenhaal will portray Bauman. The film, directed by David Gordon Green and distributed by Lionsgate, will begin shooting in Boston this spring.
